Tumblr for iPhone

So, a couple of days ago Conor posted an excellent post on WordPress for iPhone. Even though ironically I’m writing this post on WordPress for iPad, I think it’s only fair to review Tumblr for iPhone, since Tumblr is an excellent blogging service but not close enough to rival WordPress (which I will explain in a later post).
Tumblr. The easiest way to blog.
But from the iPhone, it’s even easier!
From the Tumblr website you can post a large variety of media, from Text to Photos to Video. On the iPhone, this ease of media has also been transferred, minus the Video (which should be present in the iPhone3GS & 4 version since they can record video), and placed in a perfect iPhone-esque menu:
The menu makes it easy to post any type of media, and the Dashboard has also been brought to the Tumblr app with a simple mobile-ui. You can reblog, like, and delete (your own) posts from this mobile-Dashboard, making it quite adequate to on-the-go bloggers!
When you create content, you’re also given all the optional extras available too, like Click-through-URL for Photos, Source for Quotes and Description for Links. The advanced options also give users the ability to add Tags, set a Date, or even select which blog to post this content too (for those who write several blogs!)
But for iPhone users, there is something special in the audio posts. The unique ability to use the microphone and record audio messages. Smart Tumblr. I can see where this could be useful, but it’s not a feature I use often!

And to round off the features, the Tumblr app also allows you to save drafts to edit later, but it doesn’t seem to save them on the server, only on the device, which is awkward since you therefore cannot edit the post on tumblr.com (say, if you were posting a review) and neither can you load drafts from tumblr.com, for say a quick edit on the go. Disappointing but definitely not a deal-breaker!
All that’s needed now is Video integration (perhaps upload from 3GS and 4 devices, or URL from 3G, 2G and iPods) and iPad support. Because 2x Scale isn’t really great on an app like this!
So that’s the Tumblr app for iOS. It’s a free download from the App Store, and if you haven’t got a Tumblr blog you can sign up for on free either online at Tumblr.com or in the app! Links at the end of the post, plus a link to my Tumblelog as an example of the power behind the Tumblr platform.
