iOS 4.0.1 – Does it really solve all the issues?

iOS 4.0.1 on Apple's website
Anyone following Apple, or anyone that owns an iPhone4 will know of the antenna issues. The whole “death grip” that causes the iPhone4 to lose signal if you hold it in a certain corner. A problem that Apple insists is present in all devices. Whilst this is technically true (so far I’ve managed to make a Motorola V3, iPhone3G and iPhone4 lose signal by squeezing them for a period of time) it’s obviously more noticeable in the iPhone4 (and much easier to do too).
We take a look at iOS 4.0.1 released shortly before Apple’s recent keynote and considering all the hype about the “antennagate”, does iOS 4.0.1 really solve all the issues in the iPhone?
Steve Jobs presented a keynote earlier this week to explain what Apple was going to do about the “Antennagate”. They have released iOS 4.0.1 to fix the algorithms used to calculate signal bars, but that doesn’t really solve all the issues. It only makes the drop from 4 bars to 1 bar slower, and “not as sudden”. The problem is still there, it just doesn’t look as dramatic!
At the keynote, Steve also announce that Apple are going to give away free cases, to solve the iPhone4 antenna problem. Obviously they are not able to make enough bumpers (which apparently solve the antenna problem instantly) so they will be offering some free cases from 3rd parties too – and they will even refund your bumper (if you bought one from them) too! Just don’t expect them to refund 3rd party cases!
There are a couple of articles floating around the Web suggesting that iOS 4.0.1 causes “havoc” with iPhone photo albums. This article goes on to explain that for iPhone4 and 3GS users, a simple reboot solves the problem. But iPhone3G users are unable to fix the problem with a reboot. This however, is something I personally can’t verify – purely because I don’t use the Camera or the Photos apps on my iPhone3G. Both apps are tucked away in a folder somewhere. I don’t really use them much!
Well that’s iOS 4.0.1. For more information visit the iPhone Software Update website. But don’t worry about the bugs. I’ve heard on Twitter that iOS 4.1 has already been released to developers – so more software updates on the way! But the new updates might not be released for a while, so it’s best to update to 4.0.1 if you are an iPhone users!
(As far as I am aware, 4.0.1 has not been released to iPod Touch users, but correct me if I am wrong!)
It’s also nice to see that Apple have updated their site to show that the iPhone3G does not support custom homescreen wallpaper, unlike the earlier image (which can be seen here).
